Early morning is my favorite time.  I look forward to studying God’s Word and no matter how many times I have read the Bible, there are always fresh insights that the Lord brings to me.  This morning I was reading in the Book of Daniel Ch. 4:17 “….to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.”  I thought to myself how true that was and I was reminded that no matter how despairing things may appear in the world the Lord is the one who is ultimately in control.

As I was considering these things I saw a flutter outside my window and my eye caught the sight of a bird’s nest, beautifully crafted, in the bush.  Then I saw a female cardinal on one of the branches and my heart rejoiced that soon I would see baby birds through this very same window.  How marvelous are His ways and how blessed I am to enjoy these precious moments.

I went back to the Book of Daniel and in a few moments looked out again at the window to see if the cardinal had gone inside her nest.  It was then I saw what looked like a shiny stick that I had not seen before.  It glistened.  With age comes diminished eyesight so I went closer to the window to examine this.  That is when I saw a small snake coiled around the nest with it’s head poked outside the bush as if to catch a bit of sun.  Was it my imagination or was that snake looking directly at me, confidently, through that window.  Instinctively I have always hated snakes.  They represent everything evil to me.

I decided to go outside and beat the snake out of that bush.  So I took a broom handle and went out and began to strike the branches.  The snake did not budge so I fought even harder to dislodge the snake.  Eventually the snake seamlessly and with great speed slithered away and I couldn’t even find it to kill it.

I began to pray and ask the Lord what He wanted me to learn from this experience.  I felt impressed that the cardinal and her nest and eggs represented everything beautiful in this world and how the snake (devil) comes to steal, kill and destroy.  Everyone would love to live in the realm where there are only birds singing and the joys of nature.   In our eternal home we will enjoy unbroken peace but we are still here on planet earth fighting a very crafty and stealthy enemy who is never far from our nest.  The weapons of our warfare are not carnal (broom sticks) but mighty through the pulling down of strongholds.  Daily we must pray that the Lord defeat the enemy in every area of our life and our loved ones.

When I went back into the house I resumed praying and I felt the Lord speak to me that He made the snake as well as the beautiful birds.  Rather than ask “Why?” I simply rested in the knowledge that the Lord has absolute control and perfection in all that He does.  It is our job to obey and realize these tests are to bring us forth as pure gold.  SONY DSC
