In this day we hear and read a lot about purpose. It seems many are floundering in this life. If they could just find their purpose they would feel anchored somehow and not tossed with the wind. There has been a very materialistic trend in this world to mass produce material that appeals to a niche need in every person. People need to feel significant – that their life means something. However, we don’t need a purpose driven life, we need a Christ led life. Micah 6:8 says, “He hath showed thee, O man, what is good, and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.”
Sometimes the Lord Jesus leads us beside “still waters”. The still waters and green pastures are to refresh our souls so we will be replenished to enter, once again, into the battle of daily living with the forces of this present evil world. Have you noticed, gross darkness is covering this world? The world system is turning everything upside down – good is evil and evil is good. To speak against sin is to bring offense in this politically correct environment we find ourselves in. The anti-christ spirit exalts self and opposes the righteousness of God.
When our Lord was in the flesh he revealed his purpose at the age of 12. He disappeared from his family for 3 days. That in itself is amazing – can we think Jesus is with us and He is somewhere else? When Mary and Joseph found Jesus in the Temple expounding the Word of the Lord, He seemed surprised that they didn’t understand that He must be about His Father’s business. This was His purpose and it is our purpose today. Our purpose is to be about our Father’s business and to do His will above our own.
It is not a time to find our purpose – it is a time to find and to know God. Then the emphasis is not on self but on God. Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God. When we find Jesus we have found God for there is no other God but Him.
“Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the Lord, and beside me there is no savior. I have declared, and have saved, and I have showed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God. Yea, before the day was, I am he, and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it.” Isaiah 43:10-13
Jesus Christ is the only true God and Savior. If we are looking anywhere else we will fall into error and be lost. Daily we must continue to seek Him with all our heart, mind, soul and strength and love our neighbor as ourself. Am I stating the obvious? Perhaps, but we need to be reminded what our purpose really is. The Lord will lead us into unchartered waters, places we have never been before, if we will just let Him hold the reins of our life. Our Lord does not drive His sheep. He leads.them gently forward.
