Continuing from last week’s post from David Underwood’s book, Wings as Eagles, we will now look at more interesting facts about eagles.
Wings as Eagles…
The wing-life is characterized by proportion.
To see things aright…we must get away from them.
We never see things truly…until we see it in its relationships:
We must see a moment…in relation to a week.
A week…relation to a year.
A year in relation to eternity!
(The wings of a sparrow)
soarings as eagles…gives us the power of soaring
We see how things are related to one another.
Our afflictions in the lowlands may seem great
But seen from the heights…they appear little or nothing.
“For our light affliction,
which is but for a moment, Worketh for us
a far more exceedingly and eternal weight of glory.”
II Corinthians 4:17
What a breath of a view!
Happily waiting upon the Lord…
For we that wait “shall mount up with wings as eagles”
And our affections will be set on the things above…
And not on the things of this earth!
Waiting on our God with faith
Becomes strong and lively…
Our hope is joyful and blessed.
These graces are like the
Wings of eagles…
Lifting our souls to the heights of heaven
And above worldly things.
Our flight is sustained
So long as our wings as eagles
Soar upward and continue unwearied.
(This is the only true “sustainable development”)
“…Let us not be weary in well doing:
for in due season we shall reap,
if we faint not.”
They that do not wait upon the Lord…
Are weighed down to the earth
And are concerned with the things of this world.
They’re in the fogs and mists
Of a darkened atmosphere…
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about
with so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us lay aside every weight, and the sin
which doth so easily beset us,
and let us run with patience the race
that is set before us.”
The eagle is not always strong…
The eagle is not always strong:
There is a season when it loses the feathers
Of its wings…
It sits solitary, drooping and sad
Unable to soar…
It is then that she shows herself to the sun
And basking in the sunshine
Her feathers begin to grow again…
Her strength is renewed.
She mounts up and meets the sun!
There are seasons of depression…
For those who are strong in the Lord…
But don’t droop into weariness…
don’t fold your wings!
Get into the Sunshine.
The Flight of the Eagle…
Is the Flight of Life…
The eagle is furnished with two sets of eyelids
The inner one is transparent,
And drawn over the eye…
Because its flight is always directly
Towards the sun.
Whereas other birds see objects in the light of the sun,
The eagle is a peculiar in that in his flight
His eye seems to be fixed upon the sun…
(his enemies or prey cannot see him coming…they are blinded by the sun!)
His second set of eyelids
Seems to be for the purpose of protecting
It from the brilliancy of the sunlight.
And this is the experience of those
That wait upon the Lord…
We’re exposed directly to the Light of the Son.
The flight of the eagle…is the Flight of life.
We’re flying the highest when we see
The world…the least!
We rejoice in the light
And the eagle mounts up her strongest
Wings…in the sunlight.
In contrast with the “birds of the night”…
We always want The Light thrown upon everything…
We want the Light to shine on our motives
We want the Light to shine on all our actions
We want the Light to shine on all our plans…
And to bring them all into the Light of God’s Truth.
On the other hand,
“For every one that doeth evil hateth the light,
neither cometh to the light,
lest his deeds should be reproved.
But he that doeth truth cometh to the light,
That his deeds may be made manifest,
That they are wrought in God.”
John 3: 20-21
The “birds of the night”…hate the light
And “birds of a feather…flock together.”
The Wings of Surrender and Trust
If we will only surrender ourselves
Totally to the Lord…
And trust in Him perfectly…
We shall find our souls mounting up
With Wings as Eagles…
And we’ll look down upon the cares of this world
For our hearts will be in heavenly places
And the world will have no power over us.
Our Lord said”
“These things I have spoken unto you,
that in me ye might have peace.
In the world ye shall have tribulation:
But be of good cheer;
I have overcome the world.”
To “overcome” means to “come over,”
Not to be crushed under!
With Wings as Eagles…
We’ll fly over this world
And not be crushed by it!
But, Our Wings as Eagles must be used!
The largest wings ever known
Cannot lift a bird one inch upward…unless they are used.
What weights are holding the soul to earth?
What is the weight that so easily besets?
As the eagle might try and fly
With a hundred ton weight attached to its feet…
The soul might try “to mount up with wings as eagles
With the cares of this world attached to its feet
And it’ll find that it cannot soar.
It’s like having an eagle chained to a rock…
An eagle that was designed to soar the heavens
Chained down to earth.
We cannot allow the “cares of this life”
We cannot allow the flesh to chain us down
That we cannot rise upward.
Some may ask:
How do I get these wings as eagles?
Well, how did the eagle get its wings?
BY ITS BIRTH!
It was born a Royal Eagle.
It has a Royal descent.
And every child of God
Is born with eagle wings!
But we must be born again…
Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit,
He cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.”
“When we’re born of the water and of the Spirit
we have the capacity to soar with wings as eagles.
How does God teach His Eaglet Children
To use their wings?
He comes over and stirs us out of our nest:
Sometimes with tribulation
Sometimes with a sickness
Sometimes with a death
We may be “pushed over the cliff”
And he’ll let us fall over into the abyss…
And we’ll tumble screaming and screeching…
But He’ll swoop down and catch
Us by His Wing…
And if we don’t learn how to fly…
The process starts all over again…
Until we take His Wing…
And follow Him in Flight.
We’re the Master Specimen…
You see, we are made in God’s image
We’re built for flight.
Our tendency is always to go “upward”
With wings as eagles…
The Holy Ghost will raise us up!
Our home is in the Upper Atmosphere
It’s not of this world!
We’re Built for the Storm…
We perceive the storm afar off
And we’re not afraid…
We lift up our heads
And look toward the coming storm
And prepare for a grapple with the tempest winds…
With wings as eagles rising above it…
In the clear heights of cloudless day
Because He says:
“Ye are of God, little children,
and have overcome them;
because greater is he that is in you,
than he that is in the world.”
I John 4:4
Trained by discipline…
He is teaching us to fly…
He’ll grab us out of our nest
When we get too comfortable…
And cast us off the “edge of the cliff”
“Persecuted, but not forsaken;
cast down, but not destroyed.”
II Corinthians 4:9
He will impart His Strength…
And when we become sick…
He’ll swoop down and give us the healing…
He’ll fan us with His Great Wings
And nurture us back to Life!
We’re built for Heights…
With wings as eagles
We’re not content to dwell on earth
For this world is not our home.
Our tendency is to go upward
Our nest is in the heavens.
With our Creator.
With Wings as Eagles
Let’s soar to new heights!
They shall run and not be weary
And walk, and not faint
Watch the eagle in the air
Nothing looks less like effort.
He uses the winds of the heavens to soar.
We shall soar for a while…
But there is a time to run the race.
So when we’re done flying…
We go running…
And that stage, too, passes.
Then we come to the quiet, steady, persistent “walk”
In the way of His Commandments.
And “having done all…to stand.”
Take a Firm Stance!
Wait upon the Lord
Stay strong…hold out!
He shall renew our strength…
And we’ll “mount up with wings as eagles”!
The Great Speckled Bird
“What a beautiful thought I am thinking
concerning a great speckled bird
remember her name is recorded
on the pages of God’s Holy Word.
All the other birds are flocking ‘round her
And she is despised by the squad
But the great speckled bird in the Bible
Is one with the great church of God.
All the other churches are against her
They envy her glory and fame
They hate her because she is chosen
And has not denied Jesus’ Name.
Desiring to lower her standard
They watch every move that she makes
They long to find fault with her teachings
But really they find no mistake.
She is spreading her wings for a journey
She’s going to leave by and by
When the trumpet shall sound in the morning
She’ll rise and go up in the sky.
In the presence of all her despisers
With a song never uttered before
She will rise and be gone in a moment
Till the great tribulation is o’er.
I am glad I have learned of her meekness
I am proud that my name is in her book
For I want to be one never fearing
The face of my Savior to look.
When He cometh descending from heaven
On the cloud that He writes in His Word
I’ll be joyfully carried to meet Him
On the wings of that great speckled bird,”
Let’s soar through this journey
Spread our wings
And meet Him in the Sky!
Don’t you want to see Him?
